Do you ever wonder if it’s too late to start life over?

Most people are passive spectators.
They watch their life unfold, one day at a time.
Vacations, new homes, and their careers get the most of their attention. They never think of actually planning out their life. Until, something happens that acts as a wake up call. They can see they took a wrong turn, and they can’t help but wonder . . . is it too late to start life over?

That’s how it was with Allison. She was a single mom raising a daughter on her own. Working hard every day, and spending her free time involved with her daughter’s competitive rowing team. Every day the routine was the same. Get Bailey to school, practices, competitions, fed well, homework done . . . then race to work for the day, and pick Bailey up after school to do it all over again. They looked forward to the competitions because they turned them into vacations, with every exciting detail planned out. Social time was wrapped all around Bailey’s activities. Allison was such a supportive mom, it was part of the reason Bailey earned a full ride to Boston University.

The day Bailey left for college, reality hit Allison. Bailey was gone, and Allison lost her self; she had no purpose to inspire her forward. She realized she had put everything into a plan to get Bailey to college and a plan for her work to support them, but she didn’t have a plan for her  own life

And then she asked the question so many of us ask, “Is it too late?”

At age 57, Louise Hay was bouncing checks. Colonel Sanders was living out of his car. Laura Ingalls Wilder and Stephen Covey had never published a book!

If you find yourself wondering if this is all there is to life, I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be this way. At any point and time, you can begin to  live your life with purpose and meaning.

It’s starts with painting a picture of how you want to live. A detailed image of the future. Your vision.

Many people set goals, but they can’t really see what that looks like.

  • If you want to start a side business and turn your passion into profit, how do you see it?
  • Are you working from home, or do you have an office that you go to every day?
  • Will you be selling products or services?
  • What are your customers saying about you?
  • How are you making your community better?
  • When you look ahead 3 years, what does the big picture look like?

You need to keep one foot in the present, and take a big step out with the other foot into the future, into that place that “could be.”

The important thing here is to dream and paint your picture with no limitations. Think outside the box. If the ideas feel a little crazy, those are probably the ones you need to include.  Don’t focus on “how” this will happen, zero in on what it will look and feel like. The how comes later.

As long as I can remember, I always loved to decorate for Christmas. Even as a little girl, every little nook and cranny in my bedroom would have something festive and colorful in it that I made. I would lie on my bed and revel about my holiday wonderland, and dream about having my own successful Christmas decorating business . . . I imagined being “the one” that people would call to make their homes festive. I could hear the “oohs and ahhs” and I could see the delight in their faces when they first saw their transformed homes.

Without realizing it, I was painting a picture of the successful Christmas decorating business I would someday have . . . the one I did have for 18 years. Yes, I actually got paid nicely for adding sparkle and festivity to homes and commercial venues!

How about you?
What dream do you have simmering deep down, that is just waiting to come true?
